Turn Your Dream into Reality With a Career Coach

Posted August 23rd, 2012 by Carroll King Schuller

I’ll say something you already know: Career moves are challenging. For some, even imagining a career change could be impossible. People say, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.” It can’t be that simple, can it?

It isn’t easy. Despite what you think, though, it can be fun.

Figure out what you love to do, learn what your skills are, and then apply that knowledge to discover jobs that suit you best. When you find the right job that fits your skills and your passions, you will enjoy more success, more joy and less stress.

There is so much information about career management that it can be overwhelming. Many of us have taken several career profiles, which then describe us in their terms. They make valid points, but aren’t we more than a few descriptors?

Most of us ask family and friends for suggestions or validation of our lives and careers. When we hear positives, how many of us think, “Well, they have to say that” or “They’re family, so they’re biased”?

Career coaching can structure your thinking and can allow you to move on to BELIEVE that you DO have special talents and skills. Working through a career coach, you’ll probably have several “A-ha!” moments when you see how you can make a living doing what you enjoy. Finding those sweet spots is easier with a coach.

Deciding on a career move is like looking over the landscape of the photograph above: It’s a dream that’s a long way off. The journey to that beautiful scene, though, starts with a few small steps. It takes a commitment to excellence.

Sound impossible? Think about this. In 2008, a young gymnast from Virginia had huge dreams. When she saw the U.S. women’s gymnastics team in the Olympics on TV that year, she told her mom that their coach could help her realize her dream. She made a commitment by moving across the country in 2010 to work with the coach full-time. Two years later, Gabby Douglas made history at the 2012 London Olympics.
